Inspiring Efficiency Innovation Award (2006)
Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance
District Energy St. Paul was named the winner of the 3rd Annual Inspiring Efficiency Innovation Award for its "Green Energy" program. The award was presented by the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA) at MEEA's annual "Solutions" Conference, September 27-28 in Chicago. A large part of District Energy's "Green Energy" program is the innovative combined heat and power (CHP) facility. This facility was jointly developed in 2003 by a District Energy affiliate and Duke Energy Generation Services. The CHP facility turns wood waste into green energy for District Energy's downtown customer base, including Minnesota's State Capitol Complex.
"In 2003, a new era in energy production began in downtown Saint Paul. For the first time, our customers heated their buildings with water produced primarily from 'green energy' generated from wood wasted collected from the Twin Cities metropolitan area," said Anders Rydaker, president of District Energy. "We turned around what once was a waste disposal problem into a renewable fuel, which will eventually replace up to 80 percent of District Energy's use of coal and oil. The plant is now simultaneously producing electricity for Xcel Energy and heat for District Energy. We are honored to be recognized by our peers with this distinguished award."
Contributions to Renewable Energy (2006)
American Council on Renewable Energy
District Energy St. Paul received an award from the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) for its highly-efficient, biomass-fueled combined heat and power plant. ACORE works to bring all forms of renewable energy into the mainstream of America's economy and lifestyle. The organization promotes all renewable energy options for the production of electricity, fuels, heat and hydrogen, including solar energy, wind power, hydro power, geothermal energy, ocean energy, waste energy and fuels, and biomass and biofuels.
Environmental Initiative Award (2005)
Minnesota Environmental Initiative
Market Street Energy (now Ever-Green Energy), in partnership with Cinergy Solutions (now Duke Energy Generation Services), was declared the winner of a 2005 Environmental Initiative Award in the Energy category at an awards banquet in May. The winning entry was St. Paul Cogenerationthe wood-fueled combined heat and power (CHP) plant that provides heat to District Energy St. Paul and electricity to Xcel Energy. It is the largest wood-fired CHP plant serving a district energy system in the United States.
"These winners exemplify the best of many outstanding partnerships taking place to solve a wide range of very complex environmental problems facing our communities," said Mike Harley, executive director of the Minnesota Environmental Initiative (MEI). "One of our state's greatest assets is the many environmental leaders that understand and leverage the power of partnering to create innovative environmental solutions."
