Growing concerns about diminishing energy supplies, the volatility of escalating energy prices, national security and climate change impacts have created a high level of interest in energy efficiency, sustainability and the use of renewable resources to produce energy.
There is little doubt that energy production and use are major contributors to global warming. Our great challenge is how to meet the world's growing demand for energy while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
One proven solution is to produce energy from renewable fuels instead of fossil fuels. Renewable fuels are naturally replenished and have less impact on the environment than fossil fuels. Renewable fuel sources include water, sunlight, wind, biomass and geothermal heat.
Fossil fuels are the remnants of plants and animals deposited in underground sedimentary rocks millions of years ago. We will eventually run out of fossil fuels, which include coal, natural gas and oil.
Ever-Green Energy manages the operation of the largest hot water district heating system in North America, located in Saint Paul, Minn. The system's primary fuel is a renewable resource: clean, urban wood waste. Renewable energy is produced at an adjacent combined heat and power (CHP) plant that is also managed by Ever-Green Energy.
Producing energy at a CHP plant using a renewable fuel has:
• reduced fossil fuel usage by more than 60 percent, with a goal of continually increasing this percentage
• significantly lowered carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and particulate emissions
• doubled energy efficiency; heat and electricity are produced simultaneously
• stabilized energy rates for our customers
• helped the Twin Cities metro area solve a wood waste disposal problem
• kept energy dollars in the local economy
• created additional jobs in wood-related industries
Ever-Green Energy is focused on conserving energy and on developing, expanding and managing innovative renewable energy systems that decrease our dependence on fossil fuels while reducing carbon emissions.
